Kent Elegant RO+UF+TDS Control+In-Tank UV Water Purifier Review
Kent Elegant is one of the most affordable RO purifiers from the house of Kent.
We feel most of the RO purifiers from Kent are a bit overpriced.
But this time, we are a little surprised, pleasantly though đ, to see Kent finally pricing one of their models at a more realistic level. Although, we would have been happier if the price was kept below Rs. 10,000 đ
Kent Elegant has got no special or out-of-the-box features that might get you excited. But it comes with all that is required to give you safe drinking water and complete peace of mind.
Kent Elegant – Key Features
- In-tank UV disinfection keeps stored water safe
- TDS controller for adjustment of TDS level of purified water
- Compact design, best suited for small kitchens
- Purification capacity of 15 litres per hour and 8 litres storage capacity
- Suitable for purification of borewell & municipal water supply
- 1-year warranty + 3 years extended service free.
Design
The Kent Elegant follows the same old and standard design guide as most other Kent RO purifiers. But I guess thatâs where the similarity ends.
The Kent Elegant might look similar to other Kent ROs but it is designed a lot more intelligently in terms of space utilization. The purifier is quite compact, an ideal choice for small kitchens.
The compact design generally means cutting down on the storage tank capacity. We called the design intelligent because this compact RO features a large storage tank of 8 litres.
The see-through top gives you a complete view of all the internal parts and filters.
Although the purifier automatically switches off when the tank gets full, there is no way to find out if the tank is full. The purifier doesnât have any LED indicator or a transparent water level indicator in the storage tank. This might become a handicap for some users under certain circumstances.
The water level indicator, or tank full indicator, is a useful standard feature that all purifiers with storage tanks must have.
Surprisingly, Kent Elegant also does not feature any on/off indicator for power/purification. In the absence of an indicator, how are you supposed to know if the purification process is on or off?
The absence of indicators for water level or tank full and power/purification might become a big drawback in daily use.
Purification
Kent Elegant features 4-stages of purification and is ideal for all sources of water. The water-flow diagram given below will give you a complete view of the purification process.
The brand calls it a RO+UF purifier but if you carefully look at the water-flow diagram, you will notice that the water is not filtered by both RO and UF. The input water only passes through one of these purification stages, not both.
So, it is best to call it RO or UF purifier rather than a RO+UF purifier.
But you must now be thinking, how does the machine decide whether to filter the input water through RO or UF.
Thatâs the job of the TDS controller.
Want to know more about the TDS controller and how it works? Check out this article.
If you adjust the output TDS with a TDS controller then 100% of the input water does not pass through the RO membrane. Mixing RO purified water with non-RO purified water may result in the presence of several harmful heavy metals like lead and arsenic in the purified water. Thatâs because dissolved solids and harmful heavy metals can only be removed by an RO membrane.
Another interesting feature is the use of in-tank UV in place of in-line UV.
In our view, in-tank UV is better than in-line UV. Unlike in-line UV, in-tank UV disinfection technology keeps the stored water pure for longer as it automatically switches on for 30 minutes in a two-hour cycle.
Kent Elegant comes with an in-built feature that sounds an audible alarm if the in-tank UV LED malfunctions. This is a very useful feature because UV failure can go undetected for long periods which compromises the purity and safety of the water you drink.
Another major drawback of Kent Elegant is, that it does not come with a pre-filter (outside filter). So, you will have to spend around Rs. 1,700 extra for installation of pre-filter. Pre-filter is a must-have if you do not want the internal filters and membrane to die early.
As per the brand specifications, the purifier delivers up to 15 litres of pure water in an hour. But several users have pointed out that it takes around 45-55 minutes to fill the storage tank (8 litres). The purification rate depends on several factors (like the quality of input water, condition of filters, input water pressure, etc.) and it goes down as the filters get old, this is true for all brands and models.
From our experience, all we can say is, âthe claims of purification capacity by purifier brands are as good as the claims of mileage by car companiesâ. They rarely hold true in the practical world.
Maintenance
Kent Elegant comes with 1-year warranty + 3 years of extended service. Under the extended service, all techniciansâ visits are free and you pay no service/labor charges for 3 years. This translates into an extra saving of Rs. 3,000. Replacement of parts and filters is absolutely free in the first year.
The biggest advantage of owning a Kent RO purifier is parts are easily available as Kent uses standard-size filters and membranes. The use of standard parts enables part sharing, which brings down the maintenance costs.
This is not the case with other purifier brands as they do not use standard parts and filters. This means you are always dependent on the brand for any service and spare parts.
